This page, "We've Got Rhythm," is a resource page to supplement lessons on reading rhythms for elementary school students. Rhythm is the basis of music reading and music education as a whole. When I speak to high school band and choir directors about what they want students to know coming into their programs, the first answer is often regarding rhythm reading.
I begin teaching about the concept of a steady beat to junior kindergarten students. When students are in first grade, we begin to discuss the patterns of long and short sounds, introducing quarter notes and eighth notes. In second grade, we get more in depth with transcribing rhythms we hear and analyzing tempo and meter. In third grade, we learn more about rests and work with composition. Finally, 4th graders focus in on a specific rhythm unit to prepare them for reading note names in treble clef.
The lessons I teach about rhythm span the course of the year. With this website, students, other music teachers, and I can find everything we need to teach and learn about rhythm in one place. Enjoy!
